Johnston Girls Take New York! Day One.

08 March 2026

I can't believe I haven't written this post yet. Brian keeps telling me I have to prioritize it before I forget everything but I don't know that I could ever forget this lovely little trip! We were actually kind of terrified to take with the kids. I figured it would either be the best trip ever or the very worst. And it was quite honestly, so much fun and I can't wait for the next one. These girls had a blast and Brian and I got to hit everything we wanted to do as well.

The girls have been asking to go to NYC since Brian and I last went in 2022. We came home from that trip and the girls watched Hamilton on Disney + and then we had to listen to the album nonstop. They wanted to do everything in NYC! So we pulled the trigger. We did some kid research but honestly, just did what we wanted to. We were able to still go the places we wanted with kids in tow. Think that was super helpful to show us that our kids CAN and love to travel with us.

We left early on a Friday morning from Little Rock. The direct flight was so fantastic! We breezed through security and had zero issues.

I have no idea what the thumbs down was for. She was happy!

NYC bound!!

Landed in NYC and in a tax with no booster seats! They thought this was so cool. We didn't fly with seats since we didn't anticipate riding in cars any other than cab to and from the airport.

We dropped our bags at our hotel and headed to Central Park. We stopped that this little cute coffee shop to grab some espresso, water and snacks.

When you're on vacation, you can drink whatever you want!

We did a lot of reading about NYC before we went and Emily kept reminding us that Central Park has 17 playgrounds inside the Park. So we went straight to let them play.

We walked the park for a while and sat down for a minute to figure out what we were going to do next and Emily passed out immediately. I sat here for a while and let her sleep while Brian and Kate went and did some more exploring.

First night out! We've always had Gramercy Tavern on our list of places to eat but have never made it. So this night we finally pulled the trigger. Sometimes it's hard to get a good time for a reservation. We got the early one this time and it wasn't terrible with kids. And the fact that everyone would be ready to crash early!

We started with cocktails and these absolutely fantastic oysters. The roasted oysters with herb aioli, garlic breadcrumbs and lemon. Delish!

They also brought out these amazing biscuits and fancy butter. We devoured them. Everyone did! And Brian ordered a chicken liver mousse. I didn't love it but he did.

I was really impressed with all the places we ate. Most were very nice but covered the kids. Every single place had a personalized kids coloring sheet. It was great!

the mousse. Brian and I split a chicken dish that was good but I don't actually remember much about. The girls got the Tavern Burger which was sooo good. We all shared some of it. And then we got a chocolate chunk cookie with this amazing malted milk. I love the faces when we got when this came out.

After dinner we went exploring. The girls wanted to see Times Square so we headed that way.

I was terrified this one was going to fun into traffic or something but she stood right there holding my hand the entire trip. We had a little squeeze handshake signal for moving, walking faster/slower, etc.

On the way we found a Harry Potter store and had to pop in. The girls had just finished watching all the movies with Brian.

And what's a trip to NYC without going to Eataly? We walked through and got yet another dessert. I figure with all the walking and the pure fact that it's vacation is reason enough.

Off to the Subway. Which, let me just say, these girls are pros! Headed straight for Times Square!

I was amazed at how interested in these cheesy little souvenir shops the girls were. But then they love pointless knick knacks so of course they are interested!! Kate wanted to go in every single one we passed. We finally did and let her get an I heart NYC shirt and sweatshirt! Fulfilled the need. And she wears both alllll the time!

We had a semi-early night to get some rest for the next day. We stayed in midtown this time and the location ended up really good for the girls since we were next to a metro stop. It was a little too busy in this area for me and Brian but ultimately it was good. The hotel was good, not great but we spent so little time there, it was still a win.

XOXO
