Chicago: Day Two

06 July 2026

Hello and welcome to day two! We went so hard the first day that we slept in today and took it slow. We had reservations for brunch this morning -- also Father's Day! And Kate has really been looking forward to this one. So we took the long walk to the west loop and were able to do some sightseeing on the way!

If you didn't know, we're big Top Chef fans! So we're all about places to eat that are owned by Top Chef alums. I think that's one of the reasons Kate was so excited. She also looked at the menu before and saw they had a cinnabiscuit and she loves anything like that!

heaven on a plate for sweet Kate!

This meal from start to finish was amazing!!! Every dish we had was so delish. Brian sure had a happy and full Father's Day!

Shrimp toast... 11/10!

photos by kiddos!

Roasted Pig Face. 100/10!! This was our favorite bite of the entire trip! Me and Brian :) It was so fantastic. The runny egg, the sauce, the crispy fries underneath. yum, yum, yum!!!

The Potato Crepe. This one was the least favorite but also still was amazing! It ranked 9/10.

Family picture and then off for more espresso!

Next stop was the Museum of Science and Industry. It rained a lot this day so we planned to do some inside things. This museum was SO HUGE! It was slightly overwhelming. You could spend hours, days here. When we walked in, we saw a huge slide and the girl went straight to it! We did it a few times! I didn't take any pictures but did take a couple videos.

We also booked an experience on the coal mine train. It was good but had we known the submarine would have sold out, we would have scheduled that one prior. It looked really awesome. And we joked that they built the room around the submarine, turns out that they did!

this is our whole family touching a huge piece of ice!

an airplane that hung from the ceiling was a big hit! Example of chairs way back when.. now we can barely get our knees tucked in!

Also a massive hit was the train that ran through the entire city. The girls loved this! It was pretty neat. We had been talking about how the bridges open up but never saw them-- except in this!

Love Emily in this one. I snapped the picture than said, "Johnston Law Firm." Immediately after, Brian read the plaque below and turns out... Johnston is on it!

Snapped this cause it reminded me of my Godparents. He was a pharmacist and I always went to their house to get gingersnap cookies. Dede kept them in a jar just like these! But with no name. I now have the jar :)

little girls, big museum

They had a massive part on weather alone.  But we were a little not to thrilled about that one so we walked through quickly and out.

This was so fun! We watched baby chicks hatch! They thought it was so cool. Then we were able to see little baby chicks on the other side with their fuzzy little coats. We also saw a cow being born (on a video) and it was equal parts kinda neat and terrifying.

We hoped to make it to the Obama Library but when we tried to get tickets, months ago, it was sold out until November. We were going to go check out the grounds but the rain kept us from doing that. The rain did not keep us from walking a few blocks to a bookstore that Brian had his eye on.

We were damp and the store was warm. Not sure if this is why Emily insisted that she had to go potty. But she did. And they had no public restroom. So I took Kate and Emily to Subway down the road to buy a cookie and use the restroom. When that didn't work we popped in a tiny little grocery store. When I couldn't find a restroom, I took the girls to pick out some snacks. Told Emily when we went to check out to start making a big deal about having to potty. That way, we're paying for something and I can kindly ask the clerk if they have a restroom. WHO can deny a cute seven-year old who has to potty?!

It worked! Now we have a fun memory that Emily likes to remind me of :)

Back to the bookstore to retrieve Brian. Emily and Kate can always find something.. anywhere.

We tried to take the bus back but it wasn't running. So we waited forevvvver for an uber. Went back to the hotel and grabbed a quick nap before dinner.

Still raining so we uber'd to dinner. Tonight's pick was at Aba. I actually found this while chatting with ChatGPT. Then I told our friend Kes and he said it was his fav. Felt really strong about this pick + it was gorgeous! Just look at it behind Kate!

Really delish cocktail! It felt very fall but I loved it! Was the Oasis G&T-- fords, fruitful coconut, appel's island spice cordial, elderflower tonic, lime.

The food was SO good! Emily talks about it all the time. She kept asking to go back. This was simply the hummus but look at the gorgeous radish on there. So yum!

Happy Father's Day babe!

This is the hamachi with peach, charred avocado, strawberry, thai basil, green chili oil. It was lovely!

Pause for cute kids!

Both ordered off of the kids menu. Emily got chicken fingers but really ended up eating more of our food. This is her chicken dipped in the charred eggplant, which she absolutely killed!

Kate got the butter pasta and it was yum! We also had the Lamb & Beef Kefta with lemon, olive oil, tzatziki. They had rice and pita and it was such an amazing meal!!! We skipped dessert and took the girls for gelato instead.

When on vacation, you get whatever you want. Even if that means you add a macaroon to the top of your gelato! Which funny-- this is the gelato place I went to in Paris allll the time. It wasn't until later that I realized it wasn't just a Paris thing. But when Brian and I went to Paris together, I made him go. Now we've all been and experienced it :)

It got cool with all the rain! We skipped walking back and grabbed a ride. Straight to our hotel and time to cuddle and rest. Much lower key today but hit some really fun things! Always making memories with these sweeties :)

XOXO
